Current Education Programs for Fieldtrips and Outreach

These are the programs that we are currently offering for one session activities through Imagination Place Children's Museum. Some long term programs listed below this table can be modified for a one time multi-activity fieldtrip or outreach. All programs grade-appropriate activities for primary and middle grades and most programs can be adapted for outreach at your school or program site. Programs that are adaptable for Pre-school age are marked with a star.

Wild Things and Some Other Sendak Stories* 
Follow Max and Rosie in a live stage performance as they take you on a magical journey through the world of Maurice Sendak

Shouting out Shakespeare
Calling all lords and ladies, and wee lords and ladies! Come bear witness to scenes of fantasy and fancy. Find out how much of what we say everyday is originally Shakespeare. Listen to people jest and josh in Elizabethan English. Forsooth, you say. Learn about the Bard in a fun and fanciful way!

 

One Time Hands On Programs

Leonardo’s Workshop
Discover the ultimate renaissance man.  Explore your own creativity and ingenuity while learning about the art and inventions of Leonardo DaVinci. 

Shades of Me Tolerance Program
Learn about the many shades, but single color, of human skin.  Students will use science and art to debunk the idea of “red and yellow, black and white” while learning the importance of tolerance of differences and appreciation of diversity.

Downtown Gadsden Walking Tour
Learn everything you never knew about historic downtown Gadsden on a Segway led walking tour with our own Bobby Welch, Director of the Gadsden Cultural Arts Foundation.

Southeastern Native Americans
Let our educators guide students through the fascinating and often misunderstood world of Southeastern Native American culture. Examine artifacts, create a clay pinch pot and learn a traditional story from a local tribe.

Imagine Art*
This multisensory art exploration will immerse students the world and history of art while engaging all of their senses.  Touch, taste, smell, see and hear art as you are guided through the fascinating history of art and music from around the world.

Multi-Cultural Explorations
Students will learn about the past and present of a culture of your choosing in programs designed by a real anthropologist and our education staff.  Explorations will include art and/or music as well as cultural celebrations and traditions.  Current programming includes- Modern Japan, China, Oceana, France, Italy, the British Isles, Lesotho Africa and Mexico as well as Renaissance Italy, Ancient America and Ancient Egypt.

The Gentle Gorilla*
Develop a deeper understanding of these often misunderstood creatures.  Children will learn about primate communication, behavior and biology and afterward they will learn some signs from Gorilla Sign Language and steps that are being taken to preserve this endangered gentle giant.

The Science and Art of Chocolate*
Explore the world and origin of our countries most popular confection.  Children will solve a chocolate mystery or sample various chocolates and see chocolate artists at work before creating their own chocolate masterpiece.

Tie Dye *
Swirls, bursts, stripes, rings and more.  Let our staff teach you the art of tie dye.  Create tee shirts in a rainbow of colors or choose school/program specific colors.  Tee shirts are not included.

 

Assembly Programs

Light, Sound and Illusion
Can our eyes be tricked?  How does sound travel?  What colors make white light? In this exciting interactive show you will find out the answers to these questions and more. While learning about vision and hearing your group will “see” sound, experience a laser light show and discover the secret behind many optical illusions while learning the science of both senses.

 

 

One Time Hands On Programs

Engineering Energy
The world of energy is changing and Alabama wants to participate. Find out what is already happening right here in Etowah County and throughout the state while opening your students’ minds to a new world of opportunity and science.

Creative Conservation
Learn about the importance of the new 4 R’s- reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle.  After learning about landfills, water and energy conservation and the 4 R’s, children will create art by repurposing common household and industrial items.

StarLab
Gaze into an infinitely vast universe of stars and celestial bodies while learning basic astronomy and Greek mythology in our portable planetarium. The StarLab program is adjustable for any season of the year and can be programmed to suit all ages. For outreach, 20 square feet of space with at least a 15' ceiling clearance is necessary.

Build It!
Construct with some pretty unusual building materials and learn some basic facts about engineering for strength and form.

Baffling Bubbles *
Become a bubble-ologist by learning how bubbles are made and by making some amazing bubbles.

Science of Ice Cream
Dish through the secrets of this delicious dessert. Discover the amazing, changing states of matter in this tasty experiment.

Things with Wings *
Explore insects and their world.  Younger children will explore the life cycle of the Blue Morpho Butterfly and older children (3rd grade and up) will explore insect flight and vision using art and scientific experimentation, including a look into their ultra-violet world or explore aerodynamics and the science and engineering involved in bird flight and migration

Long Term In House and Outreach Programs

The Children’s Theater Workshop*
Are your students wishing to tread the boards? Dreaming to play the part? Let them assume their roles in this hands-on and fun program. Relive and explore the world and history of theater or explore history through theater with a period play, bring to light the backstage world of directing, sound and set design,  play around with the acting techniques of mime and pantomime, reinforce learning from any subject area. What ever focus you choose, your students will be glad to play dress up, create masks and discover all the express themselves and their knowledge through costume design and learn some of the tricks of the trade and then show the world, or just your school or church, that they are stars.

Multi-Cultural Explorations
Students will take a deeper look to learn about the past and present of a culture of your choosing in programs designed with a real anthropologist and our education staff. Explorations will include art and/or music as well as language instruction, cultural celebrations and traditions. Current programming includes- China and Central America as well as Renaissance Italy and Dunyavi Caravans- Rom or Gypsies of the World.

Animation

Let the educators of Imagination Place animate your world! Our educators are experienced with creating stop motion animations and are offering this experience as a new and exciting outreach. Using actual film stills and our database of stop motion films, our educators will explain the basics of creating a stop motion animation and then let your students try their skills at creating their own original stop motion animation!  This animation can be created around ongoing seasonal and school specific themes or pick one of our kid-friendly (and educational!) themes from our selections. Give your students a brand-new, exciting opportunity of letting them create their own animation! It’s something they’ll never forget!

Fees

Assembly Programs- Each performance lasts approximately 45 minutes. The fee is $400.00 per performance for any size group. Travel fee’s are included for venues less than 60 miles from Imagination Place (Multiple performances at the same venue will receive a discount, call for fee quote)

One Time Hands on Programs -
With paid Imagination Place/Hardin Center admission of $5.00 per child, each program is $1.00 per child.
At your site (except for StarLab), $3 for 1st  program, $1 each additional program. Minimum payment for 20 children (We will still do program for fewer children, but charge for 20). 
StarLab cost includes a $65.00 set up fee plus 2.00 per child with a 20 child minimum.
Travel fees apply outside of Etowah County.

Long Term Programs- Fees vary based on duration and group size, call for fee quote.

Imagination Place Home School Class Calendar 2009-2010

 

October 29th 1:00-2:00
Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is the Mexican celebration of All Souls Day. Traditions include caring for the graves of family members, celebrating loved ones who have passed on with elaborate replicas, processions, dances and music. After learning about the ancient roots of this Latin holiday, older children will make Papel Picado, a traditional cut paper folk art found throughout Mexico and Central America and Calaveras Puppets, while younger children make traditional paper flowers and Calaveras Puppets and everyone can try their hand at rolling tamales.

November 19th 1:00-2:00
Engineering Energy The world of energy is changing and Alabama wants to participate. Find out what is already happening right here in Etowah County and throughout the state while opening your students’ minds to a new world of opportunity and science.  Get an up close look at fuel cell, turbine and solar technologies while learning the latest in alternative energy research.

December 17th 1:00-2:00
The History of Christmas Tour this year’s Festival of Trees to learn about the history of Christmas. From an early Christian Christmas to modern times, we will explore how Christmas has changed over the millennia before creating some ornaments of your own.

January 28th 1:00-2:00
 Ancient Americans Myths, mysteries and romantic imagery haunt early civilizations.  Uncover the truth about these civilizations with Ancient Americans at the Imagination Place. Let our educators share their knowledge of early Central and North Americans in this information and hands-on program. Let us debunk many of the myths and mysteries surrounding these early cultures and bring to light the truth, fascinating histories and little known facts of these early peoples.

February 25th 1:00-2:00
Astrophotography Capture the Colorful Cosmos. Using the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics MicroObservatory, an online network of robotic telescopes, our educators have taken dozens of astrophotographs and we will teach you how to colorize your own images of stars and galaxies the same way that professional astronomers do to bring out details of the astro-phenomenon photographed. Then, process your image just like a professional astronomer and create your own on-line astrophotography display to share with friends and family!

March 25th 1:00-2:00

Robot Explorations Did you know that without robots the human species could not explore the deeper reaches of space? Do you know the difference between an automaton and a robot? Did you know that robots can affect our everyday lives and we may not even know it? Discover the answers to these questions and many more in Robot Explorations. This program is used in conjunction with the Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts upcoming exhibits and lets the students further explore questions posed by the exhibit. Find out a deeper world of robots with Robot Explorations at the Imagination Place.

April 29th 1:00-2:00
Cell Lab Step inside a huge cell to see what they’re all about. Using a walk-in cell, our educators will discuss and show the activity and importance of a cell’s many activities. After taking a journey through an amazing cell students will have the opportunity to create their own cell in a hands-on creative activity that they get to keep! Don’t mess the chance to walk through a cell with Imagination Place’s Cell Lab!

Homeschool classes are $5 per child for non-members and $1 per child for members. Class fees include admission to Imagination Place and non-Blockbuster exhibits in the Hardin Center for Cultural Arts. Additional fees may be charged for blockbuster exhibits.
