EYO Spring Formal Concert to Celebrate the Old and the New

The Etowah Youth Orchestras will wrap up their 2008-09 Concert Season with the annual Spring Formal Concert on Sunday, May 24th.  The concert, which will feature performances by the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Etowah Symphonic Wind Ensemble, will be held at 2:00 PM in Wallace Hall on the campus of Gadsden State Community College.  It is the second concert of 2009 on the Daniel Foundation of Alabama Concert Series.

The Etowah Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s portion of the program includes performances of the march “Colonel Bogey” by Kenneth Alford, and selections from the massive work for chorus and orchestra, “Carmina Burana,” by Carl Orff.  Both pieces have been used in film and television, and are popular favorites.

The Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform the World Premiere of Music Director Mike Gagliardo’s tribute to the late journalist Hunter S. Thompson, titled “Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die.”  Gagliardo was commissioned by a patron of the EYO to compose the work, which will feature the EYSO with the Etowah Electric String Ensemble.  The EYSO will also perform “Mars” and “Jupiter” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst.

Tickets for the concert are $10.00, and will be available at the CCA after May 1.  For more information, please contact Mike Gagliardo at the CCA at (256) 543-2787.

EYO Presents Strings Spring Concert

The string ensembles of the Etowah Youth Orchestras will present their annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 17th, at 2 PM.  The concert will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Gadsden.  The concert will feature the June Moore Bugg Prelude Strings and the Etowah String Philharmonic under the direction of EYO Associate Conductor Roland Lister.  The concert is a part of The Daniel Foundation of Alabama Concert Series.

The program for the concert will feature a wide variety of music, including familiar classical selections and popular music.  Selections include music by Haydn and Leopold Mozart.

Tickets for the concert are $10.00 each, and will be available at the door on the night of the performance.

EYO To Sponsor 10th Annual Summer Strings Camp

The Etowah Youth Orchestras announces its tenth annual Summer Strings Camp, June 15-19, at the Mary G. Hardin Center For Cultural Arts in downtown Gadsden.  The camp, which will meet daily for one week, will be held at the CCA in Symphony Hall from 9 AM-2 PM each day.  The camp is under the direction of EYO Associate Conductor Roland Lister.

"Because of the interest in elementary strings classes throughout the school systems in Etowah County, and our desire to see these students continue with this musical experience, we have created this summer opportunity," noted Lister.  The Summer Strings Camp is designed for students who have completed one year of string training, but have no more than two years of experience.  The camp's mission is to reinforce basic technical skills, develop ensemble playing skills, and stimulate the students' desire to continue playing a string instrument.

The cost of the camp is $125.00 per student, and includes all music and materials, with the exception of instruments.  The camp fee also includes lunch each day.  The camp will conclude with a free public performance by Summer Strings campers on Friday, June 19, at 12 PM, in Symphony Hall.

Financial assistance is available for those needing assistance to participate in the Summer Strings Camp.  "We want all interested students to have the opportunity to participate in this camp," stated EYO Music Director Mike Gagliardo.  Registration for the camp will begin at the CCA on May 1.

For information on financial assistance or general questions regarding the Summer Strings Camp, please contact the EYO offices at 543-2787, ext. 32.
