10 Questions - Student Spotlight

 

10 Questions with:

Roopa Iyer

About Roopa:
I started playing piano when I was in the first grade. And played piano for 6 years. During that period I went to District and State Competitions. I was involved in Parker Memorial Baptist Church Children’s and Youth Choir and played in their handbell choir for 4 years with the help of Mr. Don Gober, the music minister. In the 7th grade I joined the Donoho School beginning band and then later moved up to the Pep/ Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Gary Harris. I represented Donoho School in the Calhoun County Honor Band for 2 years. At the time I was also participating in the school choir. I was selected for the Alabama All- State Choir 2 years in a row and also received 1’s in Solo and Ensemble. I also participated in the Jacksonville State University Honor Choir. When I started the 9th grade, I transferred to homeschooling so that I could concentrate on my studies and music. I started taking private lessons with Mrs. Kelly Crotts, the flute professor at Jacksonville State University. I was selected to play for the Etowah Wind Ensemble in 2003 and later joined the Etowah Youth Orchestra under the direction of Mr. Mike Gagaliardo. This will be my 2nd year to be apart of the both orchestras.

1. How did your musical career begin?
My musical career began when I first started playing the piano in the first grade and when I decided to play the flute in the school band.

2. Who are your primary musical influences?
My primary musical influences would have to be Boston Pops, Bond, Alabama Symphony Orchestra.

3. What do you like to listen to when you aren't playing your instrument?
My favorite styles are anything that is Indie, Punk Rock, Acoustic, Jazz, some blues artists and classical music.

4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
My hobbies outside of music are watching movies, playing tennis with my dad , swimming, playing with my puppy misty, and going on trips with my family.

5. What has been your greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
The greatest musical opportunity that I have right now being a 10th grader is to be apart of the orchestra and represent the orchestra in the 2005 Alabama All- State playing the piccolo.

6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
My favorite television shows and movies would have to be the O.C, Smallville, Alias, Underworld, Resident Evil: Apocolypse, The Lord of Rings, Harry Potter, Aladdin, The Scarlet Letter and Casablanca.

7. You can have dinner with any four people, living
or dead. Who would they be?
The four people that I would have dinner with would have to be Chris Carraba (lead singer of Dashboard Confessional), Keith Urban, Liv Tyler and Orlando Bloom

8. What are your plans after high school?
My plans after high school would be to go to a good college on a music scholarship.

9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
My historical figure would have to be Gandhi.
