10 Questions with:
Megan Miles
About Megan:
Well, if you haven’t figured it out yet, my name’s Megan Miles. I’m a fourteen-year-old freshman at Gadsden High, and I’ve been playing flute for almost seven years. I’ve loved music since I was little; I’ve grown up with it. My parents used to be in a band (my dad and brother are both in ones now) and they’ve taken me to countless concerts and music festivals. In fact, they were at a Widespread Panic concert the night before I was born. With all of this, I think I started playing flute more so I wouldn’t feel left out than anything, but I’ve grown to love it, especially after joining the EYO. Now I’m about to begin my third year in that, my first in marching band, and my seventh of private lessons, and I’m looking forward to it all.

1. How did your musical career begin?
I could cry so long (and loudly) without taking a breath. Luckily, I liked the idea, and we started looking into it when I was about seven. We eventually decided on the flute. Since I was so small, I had to use a special flute, where the mouthpiece curved back so I could reach all the keys. I got it that Christmas, and started taking lessons in January at the Cultural Arts Center.
2. Who are your primary musical influences?
My flute teacher, Carl Anderson. He’s taught me for six and a half years, and pretty much everything I know I learned from him. He’s put up with me despite bad practice habits, lateness, and even a broken wrist, so he really deserves some credit.
3. What do you like to listen to when you aren't playing your instrument?
Mostly punk rock. A few of my favorite bands are Bad Religion, The Misfits, The Ramones, Billy Talent, and NOFX. I love a couple of local bands, too. And of course, if I ever run out of things to listen to, I can always walk around my house… someone’s usually playing an instrument.
4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
Does thinking count as a hobby?
5. What has been your greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
I’ve had the chance to meet so many cool people that I would never have met otherwise. I think I’ve met two thirds of my friends through EYO or various bands. Without them, I’d be a completely different person.
6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
My favorite movies are Saved!, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, This Is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, Supersize Me, Amelie, Edward Scissorhands, and Monty Python movies. On tv, I really like Family Guy, 30 Days, and The Daily Show.
7. You can have dinner with any four people, living or dead. Who would they be?
Greg Graffin, George Bush, Jon Stewart, and Philip Pullman. I think we would have very interesting dinner conversation.
8. What are your plans after high school?
I want to go to college, maybe majoring in psychology, and I’d love to backpack Europe like my mom did. I haven’t though about it much, though, because first I have to get through high school.
9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
Anyone who has ever bothered to stand up for what they believe in, to challenge society, to take a risk. Anyone who’s given up something they love for someone they love more, who has worked toward the greater good, who’s stayed true to themselves no matter what anyone else said. These people deserve so much more credit than they get (which is usually none).
10. Describe yourself in four words.
I’m just a girl.
