Mary Catherine Pilkanis

About Mary:
Hi there! My name is Mary Catherine Pilkanis, a senior at Southside High School. Although both my parents are Yankees (Dad more so than Mom), I was born and raised here in Alabama.

When I was in fourth grade, mother came to pick me up early from after school softball practice without telling me. I reluctantly got in the car and she took me to a stranger's house. We walked in and said suprise, your first piano lesson. I was actually mad at first that she had dragged me out of practice for this. However, after a few lessons I started to like it and so began my musical career.

I started out in the Etowah Symphonic Wind Ensemble in the spring semester of my freshman year on clarinet. A few of my friends who were already active convinced me to join. I'm glad they did. The next season I auditioned for the Youth Orchestra, also on clarinet. My junior year I got an e-mail from Mike asking me if I would be interested in playing bassoon. So I gladly jumped deeper into bass clef than I ever had been before. When I finish this season, I will have been a member of the Youth Orchestras for 3-1/2 years.

1. How did your musical career begin?
I began studying piano with Mrs. Hicks in the fourth grad and joined the middle school band in the seventh grade under Mr. Murphy.

2. Who are your primary musical influences?
The classics such as Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven. My mother, who was a drummer herself, is the one who pushed me to join the band and really get into it.

3. What do you like to listen to when you aren't playing your instrument?
I recently discovered Symphony X, which incorporates metal type music into symphonic type music. It's amazing! I jam to them, musicals, various soundtracks to different movies, and of course all time classic Disney songs.

4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
I'm a pretty "outdoors" type person. I love white-water rafting, rock climbing, reading, and hanging out at the park at midnight.

5. What has been your greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
It's given me the awesome experiences to play in different settings. From marcing in a nightly Fiesta Flembue parade in San Antonio to Carnegie Hall in New York, they're good times I'll never forget.

6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
The Amazing Race, Finding Nemo, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, CSI: Las Vegas

7. You can have dinner with any four people, living or dead. Who would they be?
J. K. Rowling, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Albert Einstein, & Johnny Depp

8. What are your plans after high school?
Florida State University has just offered me a chance to study abroad for a year in either the countries of England, Spain, or Panama. After that completion I will go to Florida State majoring in Forensics.

9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
Sir Issac Newton and Albert Einstein for all their great accomplishments and contributions to the science world. God only knows where we would stand today without them.

10. Describe yourself in four words.
curious, optimistic, quirky, leader
