Caroline Pike

About Caroline:
I was born in Gadsden when Riverview was still Holy Name, and have never lived anywhere else. I was always interested in music but the love of it never really blossomed until I was in middle school and my band director handed me a French Horn. I'll never forget looking at him and thinking "what do you want me to do with this?" 6 years later, here I am, going to college with it. I went to a few junior high honor bands when I was in middle school, and have been to solo and ensemble several times. I went to Jacksonville State Honor band, All state orchestra twice, and went marched two years in the Lion's Club International parade as a part of Alabama All Star Band. My first year we flew to Denver, Colorado and had a blast. Last year we drove on a bus to Detroit Michigan and up into Canada. This is my 3rd year in the Etowah Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and my 2nd year as principal horn in both ensembles. Music is my passion, and being in EYO has been a big part in deciding what career path I want to follow. It's helped me decide that there's nothing I'd rather do than help others the way my teachers and instructors have helped me.

1. How did your musical career begin?
My musical career began when I was very young. I always sang in church, but it wasn't until I was handed a violin in fifth grade that my career really got going. When I started sixth grade, I started playing trumpet, and my band director handed me a French horn the summer after that year and it's been history ever since.

2. Who are your primary musical influences?
Well, I have two, one of which is a person, the other a place. My first influence is my Mom. She went back to Jacksonville after having the four of us, and graduated with a vocal performance degree. She's the choir director at my church and has been since I was little, so there's always been music in my house and in my life. My other influence is the summer camp my we go to. There's always music, and I've always been encouraged to express myself through it and show my talents.

3. What do you like to listen to when you aren't playing your instrument?
It depends on my mood, but a few of my favorites genres are orchestral music, acoustic, instrumental, and a'capella.

4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
I love photography, but I also love to read, hike, scrapbook, write, and I've been known to play an occassional game of ultimate frisbee.

5. What has been your greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
I'm going to Jacksonville State University on a $3000 a year tuition scholarship to play for the Southerners and other ensembles.

6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
My favorite movies are intellectual thrillers (like the Hannibal series), Fantasy, and of course, the occassional chick flick.

7. You can have dinner with any four people, living or dead. Who would they be?
Billy Joel, my Grandmother Pike, my Dad, and Jesus

8. What are your plans after high school?
I plan to go to Jacksonville State University and major in Music Education.

9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
J.R.R. Tolkien

10. Describe yourself in four words.
Passionate, Vivacious, Optimistic, and Independent
