I’m Mallick Hossain, born and raised in Alabama. I love doing anything and everything. I try to be involved in all that I can. I mainly focus on music and academics, but I like to do some sports like tennis and soccer. I began in the June Bugg Prelude Strings in which I played in for two years. Then, in eighth grade, I moved up to the EYSO. I have been there for three years so far.
1. How did your musical career begin?
I started music when I was seven because I was given a choice of either piano or violin and I started with piano. I have taken lessons for eight years now and I have played violin for six and studied privately for four years. Then, in eighth grade, I took up mallet percussion, and I have become section leader of the front ensemble.
2. Who are your primary musical influences?
Ever since I could walk, I listened to classical music almost every morning. My favorite composer to listen to was Mozart. Therefore, I would have to say that my parents were my primary influences because they encouraged me to play and listen to music as much as I could. I still listen to classical music, but not as often as I did.
3. What do you like to listen to when you aren’t playing your instrument?
I like to listen to just about anything. I like classical music, classic rock like The Beatles and Queen, modern rock like Green Day and Dexter Freebish, some rap and R&B, and the occasional techno, but not much country.
4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
Mainly sports like soccer and tennis, but I also enjoy reading and finding out all I can about technology. I am involved in as many academic clubs as I can fit into my schedule like Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish National Honor Society, Scholars Bowl, and SGA.
5. What has been the greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
The greatest opportunities that I have been provided with are the chances to attend many musical camps and festivals. These festivals and camps have allowed me to meet many new people. Also, being part of the EYSO has allowed me to meet famous and rising composers and performers. I have recently been chosen to be part of the orchestra for the local performance of The King and I.
6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
In movies, I enjoy martial arts films such as Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee and movies by Jet Li and Jackie Chan. I like action movies like Lord of the Rings, Paycheck, the Bourne series, and some comic movies like Spiderman, X-Men, and Transformers. Also, I enjoy just about any comedy movie. In television, I like Scrubs, Mythbusters, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and just about anything on Comedy Central and the Discovery Channel. Occasionally I watch network series like Traveler.
7. You can have dinner with any four people, living or dead. Who would they be?
Albert Einstein because he was a brilliant person, Socrates because he did not take anything for granted, Abraham Lincoln or Franklin Delano Roosevelt, because both were tough under pressure, and finally Arthur Miller, because his plays really capture the essence of his subjects.
8. What are your plans after high school?
I will go to college. I’m not totally sure what I will become, but I would like to be either a doctor or lawyer. However, I am not limiting myself to those things.
9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
It is difficult to narrow it down to just one person, but I would say Gandhi.

Skeptical, persevering, kind, concise.
