Etowah Youth Orchestras Takes Home Number 11!
EYO wins 11th ASCAP Award since 1996

For the eleventh time in the past thirteen years, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers and the League of American Orchestras have honored the Etowah Youth Orchestras.  Each year the League sponsors the ASCAP Youth Orchestra Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.  Since 1996 the EYO has been recognized ten times as one of the top three youth orchestra programs out of over 400 youth orchestras nationwide.

This year the Etowah Youth Orchestras maintained its place in the top three as the recipient of the Second Place 2008 ASCAP Youth Orchestra Award.  "The members of the Orchestras and I are absolutely ecstatic!  To be recognized by ASCAP and the League eleven times since 1996 is a tremendous accomplishment," said Music Director Mike Gagliardo.  "It is certainly a testament to the quality of the program here in Etowah County."

The EYO has become nationally recognized for its commitment to the performance of new music.  During the 2007-08 season, the EYO commissioned new works from composer Philip Wharton, and performed music by Nimrod Borenstein, Shirl Jae Atwell, David O’Fallon, Arnold Rosner, Larry Daehn, James Woodward, and Luis Marchan.  The 2008-09 season of the EYO will include music by Alan Moss, Robert Sheldon, EYO alumnus Kristian Latta, and Mark Wood, plus a commissioned work by EYO Music Director Mike Gagliardo.  Gagliardo has also become recognized for championing the works of living composers, and has served as a clinician at numerous national conferences for music professionals, including the American String Teachers Association’s and the League of American Orchestra’s national conferences.

This year’s award was presented at a special ceremony at the League of American Orchestra's National Conference in Denver.  The award consists of a plaque recognizing the EYO's commitment to new music programming and a $300.00 cash prize.  The EYO is in good company with this year’s awards - other orchestras receiving awards included the Boston and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
